John, are you saying it is possible that WMATA's car shortage results in OVERutilization which results in no time to maintain the cars (at least outside a short overnight window) which results in a lot more broken cars which results in even more car shortage?

That pretty much sums it up.

You run the crap out of something, the wheels will fall off sooner then later.

In my opinion WMATAs rail car fleet should be twice it's number.

  • Fewer annual miles will result in longer service life.
  • More time for the technicians to do preventive maintenance.
  • More time for the technicians to make unexpected repairs
  • And most importantly, more cars to allow the running of the railroad closer to the train control and signaling designed capacity.

  • If all of the above had taken place.

  • There would be far fewer incidents of trains crapping bed on the road.
  • Less crowded platforms.
  • No call for more more standing room aboard trains.
  • No call for four door per side rail cars.
  • No calls for building the M Street subway to seperate the Orange and Blue lines.
  • No Monday morning quarterbacks saying the railroad should have been built with four tracks.

  • John in the sand box of Maryland's eastern shore.
