Same number of trains, higher wear due to longer schedules and less maintenance; not to mention the mess that would ensue at NYP on the platforms exchanging inbound and outbound passengers. Tracks 1 through 4 (stub tracks) would become redundant too. If you can't convert at least a significant number of branches on the LIRR side to overhead wires as well, it'll be more expensive running to boot what with the extra on-board electrical equipment; LIRR hasn't had EMUs with trapdoors since the M1 came along, in addition. |
