That's 14 St (A,C,E) and that's not an original staircase. Most island platforms have their pillars along the platform edge, but some early IND stations, like Canal St, 14 St, 125 St, 175 St, and Church Av, have their pillars along the center of the platform. At the staircases at these stations, when originally constructed, the center pillars were omitted by design, and instead, the ceiling support consists of horizontal beams alongside the staircase opening, very visible and obvious from the platform looking up.

Over time, many original station exits were closed and staircases were removed and the openings covered over, but at these stations, the ceiling beams still show where the stairs used to be. At 125 St, for example, the 127 St exit was closed long ago and those stairs were removed but their locations are easy to determine because of the ceiling beams.

Because the IND tracks turn south-east onto Greenwich St below the 14 St station, the platforms are actually between 15 St and 17 St, and there used to be exits at 15, 16, and 17 Streets, but years ago the station was re-configured and some stairs were eliminated.

More recently, when the station was renovated, additional stairs were added, but not where they were before, and so some have the existing center pillars in them.
