This is a relocated stairway that was built during the 1th Street 8th Avenue station rehab in the 1990's. Original IND civil construction has two longitudinal steel support members perpendicular to horizontal cross beams supported by other longitudinal support beams, and tunnel wall soldiers columns spaced at five foot intervals.

For those on this forum that live and or work in NYC, a visit to an IND station equipped with a stairway leading to a mezzanine, the support beams are evident.

To save lots of money, NYCT decided to wrap the new staircase around the existing vertical support column.
