I'd argue that the ideal trip would be after the high speed service is upgraded between Berlin and Munich, otherwise, it's a slowish (100 to 125 mph) run in East Germany and large stretches of Bavaria.

OTOH, I'm considering riding the train from Paris to Venice, so I'm a crazy railfan too.
