I was working in Brooklyn at that time but as luck would have it, I had to go to Manhattan that morning. I think I took the M14 eastbound and then walked to the Brroklyn Bridge, walked over it and boarded a subway in Brooklyn. Mayor Koch was on the bridge at the time asking everyone to follow him over the bridge. When he saw an old lady panting and walking behind him. He asked the reporters to wait, while he waked with the woman back to the beginning of the bridge. I followed them out of curiosity. He stopped the first car he saw and ordered the driver to take that woman over the bridge. Then he rejoined the reporters not saying anything to them about what he did. I was the only witness.
