I remember the lower Manhattan blackout of 1981 very well because I was doing messenger work that afternoon in Manhattan and had gotten dinner before trying to make a phone call and unable to find a phone that work. What was interesting was power along lower Broadway was still generally on (lights were not out), but when I got down to South Ferry to take the M15 bus uptown, that's when I saw what happened.

I first had gotten on an M1 that was crowded, but that bus actually got stuck so I eventually walked over and got a Wall Street express bus that was jammed. Ironically, when the bus got on the FDR Drive, traffic was unusually light that evening. Got back to where I lived then about an hour later than I would have otherwise.
