Agree about the bathrooms. As to regional (commuter?) rail, I would just point out that before much of the South Side of Chicago was abandonned by economically functional people and businesses, headways on the IC (now MED) N of 67th during midday were close to 15 minutes M-F.
If one looks at how the 1926 fleet was designed--married motor/trailer pairs, door controls allowing one crew member to open/close all, a light in the cab showing the motorman the door status, does any of that along w/ barrier fare control and high level platforms sound like rapid transit? The major differences were sharing trackage w/mainline freight (a M-F way freight on the South Chicago Branch up into the 60s) and thus full mainline crews.
It was BTW the IC which pioneered--not very sucessfully--a mag stripe farecard/faregate system from a DOD vendor (Litton) back in the 60s. RTA scrapped the vestiges some years ago along w/ cutting fequencies outside rush hour.
