But that doesn't necessarily equate to an environmentally friendly policy. If the railroad's peak demand period and the period during which wind power is at its maximum do not align, and chances are they will not, then NS's purchasing of 1.4 TWh merely means they're subsidizing a reduction of dispatchable base load power for non-dispatchable power. That really just makes the ratio of base to peak demand that much deeper, and could ultimately result in greater emissions by using dirtier peaker plants. |
