Schenectady

Construction of a new $14 million downtown train station advanced this week when the Metroplex board approved selling a small piece of its parking lot next to the existing station.

A license to allow access to the Metroplex-owned parking area during construction was approved, and another pact allows construction of a walkway from the new station to State Street through the parking lot.

Metroplex also entered into an agreement with the state to make improvements to the parking lot that surrounds the station. The main parking lot will be rebuilt. The area in front of the Wall Street building, next to Erie Boulevard, will also be improved with $48,000 from Metroplex, which will own and operate the entire lot.

A temporary station is to be built later this summer so the old station can be demolished and the new station built on the site, to open in 2017.

A second project approved was in support of a $20 million private investment by Prime Companies and Highbridge Development. A new 144,000-square-foot, four-story building with 9,900 square feet of ground floor retail space, will have 105 apartments and underground parking.

It will be constructed facing both lower State Street and Erie Boulevard and will replace several vacant buildings and empty lots.

The Metroplex Board will provide $515,600 for site preparation including asbestos remediation. Martin Environmental Services, Inc., based in Schenectady, will do the asbestos work.

Metroplex is selling the property to the developer for $328,000.
