"I can't see shutting down a subway line for two weeks to do things right, thus these results."Heck, why not. It's a matter of setting expectations. Some lines can have partial service with one track out. If that doesn't work out, shut a line or segment for 1-2 weeks during the summer, once every 5 or 10 years. Do the rehab well enough that it stays done for a while, the technology exists now. Nearly every line has an alternate of some sort within a mile, which is less distance than us old ones walked to school, under barbed wire through sniper fire ;-). He||, the MTA could put in a runner's trail covering the OOS distance with pace runners, and charge $17.50/month: TrainIt Fitness. If you are faster than the off-duty crew you get a yard of old rail; slowest runner is conscripted to track work. -------------------- Srsly, quite a few people are either out of town or in the home country during the summer, so it's not that big a deal. One could shut 2 miles at a time, but then you'd need a shutdown somewhere on the line every year. |
