If the engineer is knocked out or unaware of their location, speed limit x is as useless as speed limit x+5. Posting it for 2mph would have made no difference in this case. If anything, that curve needs a higher limit, and some form of automatic control for fallback. The train made it 3/4 around the turn at over double the posted speed, the needed speed safety margin is less than 100%, therefore (in my amateur opinion) the posted speed is too low. |
