My experience is that Libertarians (cap L) sort of feel that automobiles are the epitome of personal freedom. Notwithstanding that they provide a way of tracking our every movement. I think they might rethink their positions a bit if transit hadn't become such a government function rather than its historic role as a private enterprise.

The late (sadly) prominent conservative Paul Weyrich was very effective in demonstrating that conservatism and rail transportation are not at odds.
