The current MSG has competed with the Nassau Coliseum (second oldest building in use in the NHL until after this season) since 1972 and the IZOD Center (originally Brendan Byrne Arena) since 1981. While they may not have had competition when it was built, Gulf + Western (which owned the Knicks, Rangers and MSG when the current MSG opened in 1968 I believe) knew that competition was coming, especially as concerts were needing bigger venues than before.MSG where it is will likely continue to be important, and yes, it could get to 75. As noted, by mid-next decade, the current MSG will actually have been there LONGER than original Penn Station was, something I'm sure many can't fathom. |
