What year did you get on that “older train” at 59 St? I think that if it were any time after 1958 it would have been a Lo-V or possibly a Steinway if it was a Pelham train since AFAIK, the Hi-Vs were out of passenger service by then. When I was much younger, I really didn’t know what a Hi-V or Lo-V was. Living in upper Manhattan and occasionally going to see my grandmother who lived off the Pelham line in the south Bronx, I always remembered seeing the large brass controller handle of the Hi-Vs. One Saturday, my mother and I went to visit my sister in Woodlawn and instead of taking the A to the D to a bus, we took the Bway Exp to the shuttle to the Lex. At G/Cent, the M/M had his cab door open while waiting for a lcl connection and I was surprised at the controller I saw which didn’t look anything line what I thought an IRT controller should look like. It was the first time I ever saw a Lo-V controller and as I got older, I got to learn about the different types of IRT cars. Depending on your age at the tim, you may not have had any more knowledge of the various types of IRT cars than I did. I may have ridden the Bluebird and/or the Budd Zephyr on the rare occasions I used the 14 St Line and the Fkln Shtl but I was so unknowledgable at that age, I really don’t remember. I do remember Multis and D types since they were around long enough for me to become aware of the various car types. I may have even ridden a composite on either the 3 Av El or the Polo Grounds Shuttle, but I was so young when they were taken out if service, that they probably seemed like just an ordinary IRT subway car to me.
