The location of the 63 St tunnel was decided before even the creation of the MCTA which was in 1965. In the fall of 1964 as part of a course in urban politics, I interviewed one Herbert Mendelson who had organized what was called “The Emergency Committee to Stop the 63St Subway” and was later changed to “The Emergency Committee for Sound Transit Planning.” The purpose of the organization was to have the city, which at the time still had responsibility for new subway construction, relocate the tunnel to 61 St where it would be closer to both the BMT Lex Av and IRT 59 St stations. Needless to say, the organization was not successful. |
