Strictly speaking, the fine is the penalty for killing someone else's fetus without her permission. Obviously they didn't have access to modern abortion back then, but it's clear they regarded a fetus as the property of its father so they'd presumably be OK with abortion on the father's say-so without regard for what a woman herself wants.Or in other words, they'd be a typical American anti-choicer. |
