The problem with keeping the entire Fulton St el running was that most of the structure was unable to hold heavyweight steel cars. Only the portions between Nostrand Av and Hinsdale St and Grant Av to Lefferts were strong enough for steel cars, one part having been rebuilt and the outer portion being entirely new dual contract construction. Although it might have been cheaper in the long run to rebuild the entire length of the Fulton El to dual contract specs, the mindset of the city at the time was to build as few el structures as possible and build subways, so the more desirable alternative was to replace what many downtown Bkln merchants felt was an eyesore over Fulton St. |
