As someone who took that F-Culver(McDonald) Express when I was in High School in the 80's, let me tell you that there were several problems with the service.
In the AM, you lost the transfer at 4th Ave, which is a heavily-used station. Stations like Prospect Park and Smith-9th Street got reduced service.
In mid-day, 2 Coney Island bound trains would terminate at Church Ave, leaving passengers to wait 15-20 mins for the next through train.
Oh, and that Bergen Street lower platform really was like something out of an eerie movie, which is why it was used in the opening scenes of Jacob's Ladder.
