Maybe all NTTs should be ordered in 4 car sets with a supplemental order of 2 car sets that could be added to an 8 car consist of 2 4 car sets to make up a 10 car consist. The BMT did something similar with is B units which were operated in 2 X 3 car consists on most lines but which had either 2 A cars or a single 2 car BT unit added to make 8 car consists when necessary. I'm sure that the techies in new car engineering can figure out a way to make the 2 car units CBTC compatible. That way the 4 car units that would be required for the BMT Eastern can be operated anywhere and those units with the 2 car butt added could be operated on any lines that can accommodate 10 car trains. |
