Sometime in the early 1950s, the ERA "Headlights" had an article containing comments by then NYCTA Chairman Sydney Bingham in which he stated that the ideal size for a rapid transit car on the NYCTS was 60 ft long X 10 ft wide where such a sized car can be accommodated. Of course it wouldn't work on the IRT but he felt that on BMT and IND lines that was the ideal sized car to be operated. The fact that many locations on the IND and BMT had to be modified to allow for the operation of 75 ft cars seems to lend support to his position.
