This junction used to be even busier: prior to opening of the State Street Subway in 1943, this also had to handle north-south through services, including Kenwood-Wilson rush hour locals (which I believe lasted until 1949). Until 1951 (opening of the Milwaukee Avenue Subway), Logan Square trains. Until opening of the Congress Street line in 1958, Garfield Park trains. And, of course, until 1963, North Shore interurbans had to be squeezed in too. The tower operator in 1940 or so must have been one busy guy.
