An operator's cab is NOT a public place even if the door happens to be unlocked.

It wasn't an operator's cab. It was little more than a closet.

If a person walks up to a private residence, finds the door unlocked and enters that individual is still guilty of the crime of "breaking and entering." Despite the door being unlocked anyone who enters is still guilty of unlawful entry!

Apples to oranges. A private residence is unmistakably private. A subway car is not.

If you open a closet door in a public building, that's not unlawful entry.
