The MTA could buy the Jamaica and Howard Beach portions of the AirTrIn today if the governor asked for it.The JAMAICA and Howard Beach portions were built to subway standards to accommodate 75' subway cars. The JAMAICA portion even lays flat for possible intermediate stations, and of course at Howard Beach a flat junction could easily be built to connect to the Rockaways. If it were up to me I would have that subway line run from Rockaway Park to Main St, Flushing with a flat junction from the Van Wyck to JAMAICA station. The T/O will change ends, just like at the Hobeken PATH station does on nights and weekends. The inner airport AirTrain AFAIK is not built to subway standards and can continue to operate as is. |
