Many years ago, a track foreman told me that when a train is in push mode, there is more stress on the rails generated by the truck closest to the engine, recieving all the locomotives torque.
However, the increased stress is well within tolerated limits (so he says) therefore no restrictions or limits on the use of push pull trains.

Push pull trains have been around for generations & I've never heard of pushing being a direct cause of a derailment...anywhere.
