Just barely maybe.

If the locomotive has a lower center of gravity than passenger cars (not sure), it might have stayed on the tracks. And then if it had stayed on the tracks, just maybe the couplers would have held the remaining cars on the tracks.

But even if true it would not be a reason to stop pushing trains. You might, or might not, prevent one accident in the next 100 years.
