The thing is that you have the "I work for a transit agency" ace up your sleeve, which often gives a level of respect amongst other employees of transit. I'm not sure how it would have gone if you were just a civilian transit fan with no direct ties to transit.A friend of mine works for a local transit agency and records videos of a number of other transit properties in North America, and from time-to-time will use the fact that he's an employee of the agency to calm things down if a concerned employee tries to wrongfully restrict him from photographing the system. I'll always regret not standing up for myself and my photography rights. I was at the Rockville Metro Station, getting ready to photograph and ride one of the few remaining Flxible Metro E buses that was parked at the old T2 stand. With camera poised, I was being "polite" to let the driver adjust his mirrors and get out of the shot, when the driver questioned what I was photographing. "Oh, I'm just taking a picture of the bus" I replied politely. To which I got a stern, "You can't take pictures of the bus" reply. (Note that it is perfectly permissible to photograph the Metro and any public areas of each Metro facility.) Not wanting to get into further confrontation as I was hoping to ride the vehicle, I just moved on. Sadly, I would NEVER get the opportunity to photograph one of the Flxible Metro Es ever again, as they were retired. Therefore, I support guys like Carlos Miller who are willing to stand up and say "no" to what's wrong, even if they have to be forceful and even if they may get into trouble. If they had no direct chargeable offense for what Carlos was doing, then they shouldn't be able to fine him and they certainly should have let him travel home on what appears to be a ridiculously infrequent train. I wish I had such courage, but alas I don't at the moment. I also have to be careful about certain things I do with the law as I am a young black male, which unfortunately makes me a likely criminal/thug/troublemaker in way too many prejudiced eyes. |
