Caltrain's waiver, which would be fairly simple to adapt to the NEC, specifically allows the operation of compliant and non-compliant passenger stock on parallel tracks (F59PHI+Gallery cars next to whatever Bilevel EMU they buy), while forbidding freight operations on tracks directly adjacent to those being used by the new EMUs.Whatever traps the Acela was going to have were eliminated when they decided to go with Tier II compliance. Apparently it is virtually impossible to meet the FRA's demand for buff loading when there's a yawning 11 foot long chasm (or low platform capable doorway if you prefer) right behind the corner post. |
