The vast majority of the announcements on that clip are Kathleen Campion, but there are also some Dianne Thompson, and I believe Catherine Cowdery clips, as well. Plus, of course, Charlie "Please Stand Clear of the Closing Doors" Pellet.

I was the recording engineer for a lot of the subway announcements when I was senior radio engineer at Bloomberg. We used Dianne, Catherine, Kathleen, Charlie and Jessica Ettinger on most of the recordings, and as requested by the MTA, we tried to isolate them by line, so that no one's voice was heard on more than one line per division. The idea was that by keeping voices isolated on a single line per division, there would be less confusion. If that policy continued following my departcher I don't know. We started with the new R142 (ff) IRT cars, since they were delivered first; and later did the R143(ff) BMT/IND cars after they were delivered.

For the techies out there: the recordings were made in a small voice studio using AKG 414C condenser microphones and Air Corps Voice Processors feeding a Wheatstone A-500 console. The original recordings were made digitally direct to hard drive and edited in the digital domain using Syntrillium's "Cool Edit Pro" (now Adobe Audition). This was still fairly new technology in the late 90s. The resulting WAV files were then copied to Compact Discs, and were delivered to the MTA as WAV files on CD to keep the audio quality as high as possible. How the MTA transferred the files to the subway cars PA system I do not know. I'm not sure if they kept them as WAV files or used some other formats. I'm going to guess and say they kept the WAV files intact because they were being very particular about the quality of the recordings.

I was told by MTA people that this was because of the complaints about the unintelligibility of a lot of subway station PA announcements. They didn't want the same complaints about the in-car announcements.

In any event, to bring this back on topic, to try and clear things up, I contacted Dianne tonight by email and she should be able to clear a lot of this up. I'll let you know what I find out.
