The notion that one group should have exclusive rights to a set of initials is preposterous. As far as internet sites go, why couldn't they leave the World Wildlife Fund with wwf.org, and the World Wrestling Federation with wwf.com? In more general usage, even the most widely known initials don't always mean what they usually do. There was a group called the United Soccer Association that used the initials USA, for example. Then there was the story that some witnesses to the Columbine HS massacre noticed that some of the police who responded carried shields that were marked NATO. Something seemed very wrong; there was certainly no valid reason that troops from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization should have been there. Turned out, though, it was the National Association of Tactical Officers. Then there were the two CIA chips in every Commodore 64. Not from the spy agency, though; they were Complex Interface Adapters. |
