Selkirk posted a good reason for cable, but there's probably something else at play too.

My full time job used to be administering a campus network, and even directly plugged into The Internet (as in, nothing but gigabit cables between my office computer and some regional backbone) I couldn't get upload speeds faster than maybe 20mbit. I'm not sure what my download was, speedtest sites didn't show it accurately and trying to torrent the entire Debian installation (~8 dvds) had the data coming in faster than the hard drive could write it... I stopped getting I/O errors when I capped it at 500mbit though :).
