I can attemp to take a crack at this. One possibility That I have noticed is whenever Q and N train show up @34th they will let the N train go first because of theres a good chance there may be another train behind it. Usually around 23,28 street theres a slight backing up of service with the N and R, while as of June of 2010 the Q has sole possesion of the express tracks from Canal to 34th street on the weekdays. If you let the Q train go first, sure the N can sit and wait but it also delays the R that may be sitting outside waiting to get into 34th. If you let the N train go then let the train thats following that N train to at least get into 34th street, make its connection with that Q train to Astoria or what ever train the passenger may want then its a win win situation.
Another factor is Astoria riders do complain ALOT. Imagine boarding an R train to 34th street and having the Q go first blocking out the N then have the N train go second blocking your train out and now whe nyou di get into 34th street you have to wait for another series of Qs or Ns to show up. Thats just been my observation and opinion
