Being reasonably familiar with the area, I don't believe (4) has any significance. There are a number of small oddball short roads in this area. If this image were to be continued to the right about two blocks, just after where Pitkin turns slightly south, one would notice that Pitkin becomes a narrow road at 80th Street - it is a wide road in this photograph. Also, at the northeast corner of Pitkin and 80th Street there is a subway-type grating. However, TunnelRat claims this is a Con Edison underground chamber entrance.
There are no subway-type gratings between Conduit Avenue and 80th Street. There is an emergency subway exit on the south side of Pitkin in the center of Conduit.
