GPS does provide the necessary accuracy to be of some service. However, you were correct in that if you had two trains adjacemnt to each other, GPS' accuracy would be insufficient to keep them separated for purposes of say, switching tracks and so on.

But youcould use it to keep trains separated on the same track. Your software would have to compensate for the error, though.

I am not aware of GPS-supported CBTC systems in operation today. If indeed there are none, I would not say that I would endorse GPS' use on a revenue CBTC system such as New York's; I would support an experimental trial of a GPS supported CBTC system on a test track somewhere, to demonstrate its potential and its limitations.

But the blanket assertion that GPS cannot be used at to support CBTC is nonsense.
