Did you ever open a can of worms.I won't even go into the complexity of copyright law. Digital media has made the issue much more complicated, as with music CD publishers who don't want you to sell your legally purchased music CD. Nor the issue of the validity of the license you have with the New York Times which allows them to place contact (e.g., a cookie) on your personal computer, or prohibit you from deleting it. But let's just consider the moral implication. I delete a cookie in order to read an article in the New York Times (not copy, transmit, or otherwise convey to others outside of the bounds of fair use) for the purpose of making a scholarly political point on SubChat for the edification of my fellow scholars, Bingbong, Olog and SMAZ. I have committed a moral crime. Now The New York Times is given explicit access to materials covered by the espionage laws of the United States and other countries by Julian Assange, a person not entitled to have or disseminate those materials and they self-righteously publish it, because it's there and they can. There is no point in personal attack, spare us all the "liberal morals" crap. This is the digital version of picking up a discarded newspaper on the subway and reading it. Nobody pays for that, either. One isn't supposed to riffle through someone's else's garbage yunno. The trick was disseminated on a technical blog 2 years ago, and the NYT has the right to contact the blog and demand removal of the message to defend their copyright. They have not. |

Obviously that is not their intent since they are charging for users to access more than 10 articles. That there are easy ways to circumvent their policy and no penalties for doing so does not make it right. I'm not saying that it's a crime, but you are misrepresenting their operating policy. |

Or better, the Times might hire some competent webmasters who can code up the licensing module in Adobe Flash since they're using that on their pages. Adobe action script code can take care of that without using the completely unsophisticated method of putting the count in a cookie where anyone can find it and delete it. That's the reason for my chiding in with that ... their technical staff are idiots. |

It was indeed. Story behind that is that the owner of the studio went on vacation to Bulgaria for a month and failed to put together taped shows for his absence. Cable company called the studio saying "where is tapes?" No tapes. Cable company said "if you don't get tapes over here in time, we cancel show and it goes to the bottom of the list for renewal at some future date.Couldn't produce a show we knew nothing about and had never seen, owner never got back to us with what to do, and so "Bulgaria Today" got replaced by "Bulgarian Surprise Hour" owing to the unnecessary surprise for us and we whipped up a show in two hours and went live with it since there was no time left to tape something and scoot it down to 23rd Street. And so we gave O'Reilly an idea he would use years later ... Now remember ... this was back in the 80's when Ronnie was taunting the Russkies. Needless to say the show was a hit ... not so with Bulgaria though. :) |

Hate to tell you, but Comcast is not an asshole. I've had Comcast since 2002 when the last owner of the Balimore city system got into the AT&T family and the government made the sell a lot of their cable systems. Comcast bought it for $5 Million (then had to put $15M into it to bring it to their standards). Since then ZERO problems with them, and their people have always been very nice to the customers. |

They're not impressing many customers in other parts of the country between their rate hikes and now their internet caps. Now while your TV service is somewhat rate-regulated for their "basic" tier, there is no regulation or redress for any of their other rate policies. Comcast has not been making friends lately. And as much as I *loathe* TimeWeenie, so far they and the rest of the industry are watching what Comcast is getting away with VERY carefully and will be following. |
