And compared to USC and Ohio State, Washington got royally screwed when the USC and UCLA boosters felt they'd gotten to be too much a challenge on the schedule. |

Not so easy being a Bowl Subdivision independent, Notre Dame notwithstanding. (And even ND is Big East for all sports besides football, which begs the question, would all Penn State sports be kicked out of the Big Ten, or just football? Because the other sports really had nothing to do with that shit, as Sandusky (AFAIK) was not involved with them. Only connection is that the Athletic Director presided over all sports). |

I will say no---the punishment in a matter like this should instead follow the perps. In fact, I think that Penn State could challenge such a penalty as in violation of the NCAA's own bylaws. |

The real problem is that they protected said perp. Penn State is not so innocent and an example has to be made. It is unfortunate that this will happen, but the school will have to answer for at very least not doing enough to protect these kids from a criminal! |

It's well known that athletic scholarships don't produce scholars. You mean like Bill Bradley? He was offered 75 scholarships but declined them to go to Princeton. After graduating in 1965, he attended Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship before playing for the Knicks. What about Emily Fox? She attended The University of South Dakota on an athletic scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude with honors and is a Phi Beta Kappa. She starts medical school next month. Or what about Kansas State student-athletes Matt Giller and Ryann Krais, (both on baseball scholarships) who were named recipients of the 2011-12 Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships in an announcement by the Big 12 Conference last month? Or athletic scholarship tennis player Parker Goyer, who graduated from Duke and won a Rhodes Scholarship in 2009? Or Harry Edwards, an Emeritus Professor at the University of California at Berkeley (UCB). He attended Fresno City College from 1959 to 1960 as a four sport student athlete and transferred to San Jose State University in 1960 on an athletic scholarship in track and field. In 1971 Edwards earned his Ph.D. from Cornell and became a sociology professor at UCB. 'Nuff said. |

It's well known that athletic scholarships don't produce scholars.Did you, or did you not make this statement? It is an absolute statement, i.e., there are no scholars who were on athletic scholarships. Did I, or did I not post about five people who were on athletic scholarships who went on to do post-doc studies, and in two cases were Rhodes scholars? You're now 0-2 in the last few days. Not an impressive record. |

However, 5 exceptions do NOT change a thing for the thousands that attend a college on an athletic scholarship and walk out (if they even finish) as illiterate as when they walk in. Happens all over, especially at the bigger schools where sports=$$$$. |

Penn State isn't in a big city...it IS the big city (that's dubbed State College) and the center of commerce in that area of the Pennsylvania. While my heart goes out to the victims of that sick bastard, I have serious concerns with punishing the people who had nothing to do with this, school and otherwise. |
