It was founded on the principles that if you follow the laws of the land, as a citizen you'll be granted certain inalienable rights. What religion you practice and how you practice it (including voodoo) were none of the government's business. While there is some basis to make the claim that our system was based on the Ten Commandments, the fact that each of the commandments may not be treated with equal value in our legal system, and the fact that we have laws not addressed in the Ten Commandments, proves that this is not in any way so. |

It should be noted, however, that Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott confirms that students in Hawkins' school recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sing America, The Beautiful every day. The song does contain the lyrics, "God shed his grace on thee/And crowned thy good with brotherhood/from sea to shining sea".Apparently Hawkins' objection to the lyrics in God Bless The USA didn't prevent her from permitting America, The Beautiful to be sung in her classrooms. I don't, therefore, understand why there is such an uproar. However, I'm not even gonna try to defend this woman's scatterbrained policy on bathroom use by students. That's just loony. |
