Controversial Newsweek Cover Calls Obama "The First Gay President" |
|
Posted by JayZeeBMT on Sun May 13 21:50:07 2012 has put Obama on their cover this week as 'The First Gay President', complete with rainbow halo. Hailing the President's record on LGBT issues, EIC Tina Brown writes, "Obama has earned every stripe in this haloed rainbow". Obama has, far more than any President before him, been an advocate for, and assistant of, the LGBT community in our struggle to achieve equality in America today. The firestorm continues. |

I had other people say that earlier in the week. That Obama is the first "gay" President in the same way that Clinton was the first "black" President. Obama has (among other things) ended the ban on gays and lesbians in our military, required all hospitals in the US that receive federal funding to allow the partners of gay and lesbian patients visitation rights, ended the 40-year ban on LGBT federal employees from receiving security clearances, issued executive orders prohibiting discrimination against LGBT job applicants for federal positions, and opened political asylum for those seeking to escape anti-gay persecution in their home countries.PLUS, he came out in support of gay marriage. When I interviewed him last year, Obama was already moving towards support of marriage equality. New York's gay-marriage bill was about to be voted on, and his comment was "I'm proud to see democracy at work". Not quite a ringing endorsement of gay marriage, but a veiled indication of where Obama was going. |

Interesting article in the New York Times.Salient quotation from a Lutheran minister’s sermon: “As Lutherans,” she preached, “we don’t give each part of the Bible equal weight. Luther described the Bible as ‘the cradle of Christ.’ The whole book contains the story of God, but some parts touch the baby more closely than others.” [This after the usual business of talking about Leviticus and shellfish etc] Here’s a thought: is there any correlation between the willingness of a given part of the Christian church to ordain women and its willingness to accept gays? |

Bad science has been a hallmark of humanity since ... well ... forever. Once upon a time, it was believed that many diseases were caused by small toads. But yeah, DADT didn't make much sense at all - typical sweep it under the rug. They should have listened to Barry Goldwater back in the 80's, "You don't have to BE straight to fight for your country, you only have to SHOOT straight" ...During the early days of the "war on terror" we lost a farkload of good translators and analysts because some moron thought they were gay. Discrimination and hate is immoral and UnChristian and is anathema to Christ's message of Brotherhood and Salvation. Barack Obama walks with Jesus. Like Jesus, he is The Way, The Truth and The Life. What is supposed to make the United States different from other nations is that our Declaration of Independence (which is this country's mission statement) is based on self-evident notions of truth, justice and equality. That innate decency and morality is the cornerstone of the American Experiment. We are not a nation based on an ethnic group like most other places. We are one based on an Idea. A revolutionary one that was never done before. Just like Christ's idea for all of humanity in all the world. Putting obstacles and hurdles to the progress of these concepts is Un-American. Somebody who believes that some Americans, through no fault of their own, do not deserve to seek the Pursuit of Happiness and share the Blessings of Liberty that this nation is founded upon has no place in America. |

I find this quotation interesting.Initially, in my experience, Judaism believes that the dietary restrictions set forth in Leviticus only applies to the Children of Israel NOT the other nations of the world. Judaism has always maintained that Gentiles are free from all of the restrictions contained in the Hebrew Bible except for the Seven Noahide Laws. Now, I understand that Christianity believes that the Hebrew Bible is also part of its Bible but that Christ's grace released everyone from many of the restrictions in Leviticus. Fair enough - either way, Gentiles have no obligation to keep the laws of Leviticus. But for this minister to start "picking and choosing" which portions of the Bible's restrictions are to be given more or less weight is, to me, risky territory. Her comparison of the Bible to a cradle is misguided, in my opinion. Say you want to build a cradle. You say to yourself, "the parts that hold the baby will be built with the strongest materials, while the parts that don't touch the baby will be built of lesser material." Does anyone build a cradle that way? Should part of the cradle be built of solid oak and the rest of flimsy balsa wood? To me, all of the words of God mean what they say and are given equal weight to each other, none less and none more. Once you start to rationalize and change the strength of the words, you weaken the whole thing. |

You have to pick and choose, or else consider it all with a grain of salt, in those cases. |
