And it sometimes landed at Edwards AFB and IINM Edwards was also the site of the spectacular crash of the early space shuttle test vehicle shown at the start of the 6 Million Dollar Man. The Smithsonian is the national museum, and should have the Discovery. They could have sent the Enterprise anywhere after the Smithsonian got the Discovery. NYC is EXTREMELY lucky to get the the Enterprise even. Cities around the country with no more or less to do with the space program would have loved to have it. |

I went by the original post which suggested that wind would be a flight decision factor:Depending on the wind, the Enterprise should be flying over the city this morning. News reports say Battery Park area should be ideal for taking pics. As to the stack, winds aloft were predicted to be in excess of 60MPH after fropa, and so offered what NOAA had to offer in case it mattered. Of course, leave it to our "chorus of idjits" here to make hay while the sun shines. I *did* say that these are professional fly boys and they'd probably laugh at the winds, but of course that got glossed over. And so it goes. |

NYC is VERY lucky to even get the Enterprise. Many museums around the country would kill for something like that. And let's not forget the major significance the Enterprise has. It's the FIRST unit built, and the basis on which the whole program was built. The Enterprise is perhaps even more significant than any of the others in that respect. It's like having the R110's or something at the museum. |
