The prior poster said that I am the only one who felt that the word "Jew" is offensive. The article showed that others have this concern as well.There is no question that the word "Jew" can be used as an epithet and as such, it should be banned. I went to high school in Flatbush, and when some neighborhood goombas wanted to pick a fight, it was always the same: "Hey, Jew!" We all knew what they meant. If I had responded, "Hey, Roman Catholics, whaddya want?", would that have made any sense? |

It's in the JPS translation of the Tanakh (from "Yehudi"), one of the first instances being 2nd Melachim (Kings) 16:6 (and there are others). There is no other common name for the tribe of Judah, sorry. |

That's what I meant by "evening the score" as in a hail of bullets.And FWIW, the proselytizing by the born agains pisses me off immensely - Catholics are taught differently and generally don't do that. I dunno ... maybe you're reading too much into what he was after there, he explained it in his bit about how he raises his kids with both traditions and the Christian one just seems to be more "fun" ... Perhaps you're taking it too seriously. Stewart speaks ill of anything that'll get a chuckle. I'm sure somewhere south of Kentucky, there was a lot of butthurt over what he did to Jesus too. :) |

If you can keep your lunch down, go rent his film, "Religulous" ... he explains it all in that film including everything I said that you're responding to. In Stewart's case though, he and his wife decided on both. Let the kids themselves do the "choose" when they reach the "age of consent" rather than choosing for them. I see no problem with that myself. It's a hell of a lot more challenging though.A couple of my cousins are doing the same thing with their kids. |

I just saw the video in question (posted by a FB friend) and I honestly didn't think it was funny at all. Either Jon Stewart paid the audience to laugh so much or the audience was a bunch of idiots. (And for the record, at the sedar I attended the kids really got into it very lively during Dayenu, Echod Mi Yodea, A Der Hu, Chad Gadya, etc.) |
