Apple trying to silence firm who discovered massive botnet

They realize the ONLY selling point a Mac has is that it's more secure:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/andygreenberg/2012/04/09/apple-snubs-firm-who-discovered-mac-botnet-tries-to-cut-off-its-server-monitoring-infections/

I'm betting 3 out of 4 PC users are also unknowingly infected with botnet related malware, so internet security in itself is elusive no matter what OS you use.

They realize the ONLY selling point a Mac has is that it's more secure:

First of all, I'm sure Macs have many other selling points. Second of all, no, Macs are not more secure. It is obvious that the issue is market share and lack of interest in attacking MacOS.

I'm betting 3 out of 4 PC users are also unknowingly infected with botnet related malware,

Wrong again. So I'll take your bet. What's the wager?

Good post. 100% correct on the first part. Probably also correct on the second part.

I stand by both statements. Botnet malware is especially insidious. It's designed to trick the user into thinking nothing is wrong, is practically immune to all security software and is generally inert 95% of the time.

I stand by both statements.

DUH. Otherwise you wouldn't have made them in the first place (because we know you probably never bother to confirm your initial beliefs/reactions)! Unfortunately for you, many of the statements you make and "stand by" are 100% wrong, factually and/or logically. Fortunately for me, I call out your incorrect statements and base my corrections of you on my prior knowledge and/or new research that I complete for this specific task. Since I'm hardly ever wrong in that regard, you should have taken the hint to correct yourself. But you didn't. LOL. That is why you have no credibility.

The first statement is one of opinion. The Mac's decades long selling point has been that it's generally ignored by most malware creators. That's just not true anymore. Unless you were raised from birth in a Mac household, there just aren't any other advantages, which is why the PC dominates the market.

The first statement is one of opinion.

Wow.

The first statement is a faulty opinion based on faulty 'factual' information (i.e. information that you purport to be factual but which is not). The first statement is incorrect in (at least) two ways, as I clearly demonstrated in my reply to you (which you have ignored).

Just because you are stating an opinion does not mean you can't be wrong. This is something seemingly not understood by some/many on this forum. You most certainly can be wrong when stating certain types of opinions, as I showed.

If it's one of opinion, then you should have presented it as such. You presented it as fact.

I'll concur with the expoeriences of Dr Web's folks as far as talking to Apple. Last year, during another major outbreak, I called Apple with analysis of a fake AV trojan that was hitting far and wide and some recommendations as to how to stop it. After several days of emails back and forth, did a conference call with their VP of Security. Gave up all the data I had, got blown off. Took them about four months before they finally did something about that. Had they listened, they could have had a detection definition inside their own security monitor but chose not to.

As for the number of infected Billyboxes, it tends to average between 5 and 8 percent of all machines. But that number is larger than the total number of Mac users. FWIW, Microsoft *is* getting a little better with their defense and Apple is going straight to hell on it. Here's hoping that THIS episode finally causes them to "think different." :)

Hey Nazi boy, Why is it that many companies are all-PC until you get to the advertising and graphic arts departments which are all Macintosh? Only Macs have the capabilities that modern graphic artists demand. Of course Nazis dismiss creative endeavors as being "unmarketable" even though most companies use art services and art and cultureis a part of all civilized societies.

That's not why. It used to be true and by the time it stopped being true, path dependence had set in. Some of the better applications are or used to be Mac only. It wasn't worth porting them to PC.

They realize the ONLY selling point a Mac has is that it's more secure:

It's definitely not the only selling point, but it is the oft-repeated one. Other selling points include:
-Higher quality hardware (not sure if this is still true, but for a while installing Windows XP on a mac would result in the best gaming laptop for the price)
-It works out of the box with no bloatware
-Better integration with iDevices
-You aren't a proper hipster without one

I'm betting 3 out of 4 PC users are also unknowingly infected with botnet related malware, so internet security in itself is elusive no matter what OS you use.

Until Windows 7 I am pretty sure that was the case (close to 40% of the PC users on my campus would at some point during the year be caught with malware during our proactive scans). Now with UAC it might be a bit better. I'm pretending Vista doesn't exist.

I watch the statistics on Win7 ... SLIGHTLY better, but they're still getting nailed. And ASLR ain't helping all that much either.

Heh. I still have an XP box myself, but it's not allowed on the intarwebs. When Vista came out, I decided it was time to stop writing Windows software and sold the company. Life is good without Windows and Mac and spending more time cleaning a machine than using it. :)
