yes, and this is NOT a flag "flying at Pearl Harbor", it's a photo of a JAPANESE Submarine, participating in a muiltinational bi annual event, done with many countries. the flag is flying on the JAPANESE submarine, not "above Pearl Harbor".

It’s a Japanese flag at Pearl Harbor the very thing you said was offensive. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Japanese flag is flown over the naval base at Pearl Harbor as well.

what are you babling about here? who is talking about a mosque? what does THAT have to do with the comment *I* was responding to of yours, which was:

how would you react if there were Muslim symbol at ground zero

Ok, if there are going to be religious symbols at “ground zero” (and I don’t want there to be) than peaceful, law abiding Muslims have a right to be represented.

yes, and there's still no japanese flag flying over it.

How do you know it wouldn’t surprise me if there is one at least when these joint exercises are going on?

and they have nothing to do with the conversation about "a muslim symbol over ground zero", that YOU even brought up.

I brought it up because you said the following:

So bring something from "your" religion. I could care less if they put a big Star of David in the middle if they want. Go for it.

You can’t allow symbols from one religion without allowing them from all religions.

LOL!!! try and grasp some more straws as you continue to sink. there's nothing wrong with japan flying THEIR flag on THEIR ships that are participating in a multicountry, biannual event.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Japanese flag is flown over the naval base at Pearl Harbor as well.

so show it to us, all you did was show us flags on Japanese vessels participating in a multi-nation event.

Ok, if there are going to be religious symbols at “ground zero” (and I don’t want there to be) than peaceful, law abiding Muslims have a right to be represented

there's no 'religious symbol' going there, a t-frame piece of steel from the wtc is going there.

How do you know it wouldn’t surprise me if there is one at least when these joint exercises are going on?

During the multinational, biannual event in which Japan participates in? Maybe, but probably not, and even if it was it would still only be there for the event. And that's if it even is.

I brought it up because you said the following:

correct. you brought up a muslim religious symbol, AT WTC site and I responded to that post. STILL have no idea how that all of a sudden became a mosque.

You can’t allow symbols from one religion without allowing them from all religions.

no one is not allowing it. come up with some other debris that may be debris that they saved from the pile, and I am sure they will let you put it in.
For example, they found a prayer book or something from some Jewish person's luggage from one of the planes or something like that, or some Buddist artifact from some Buddist, they will gladly put it in one of the display cases for you. They may even put Mouhammad Atta's prayer note book in the showcase as an artifact if they found that piece of trash.

The Renaissance, Age of Enlightenment and Modern Science are all within the modern Christian era. Christianity didn't disappear in 1400. More specifically, the industrial revolution, by which all the technology of a modern city was created as a result, was spearheaded by devout Christians called Dissenters. Without them, Western Europe (and America) would still largely rely on mercantilism, slavery, wooden ships and agriculture.

Don't argue history with me. You will lose.

Here's some

Virtually all of the major innovations which led to modern industrialization can trace their origins back to the English dissenters. James Watt, the man credited with inventing the steam engine, was a Dissenter. Dissenters believed that technology and profit were subordinate only to faith in God and Jesus and pursued advancement with a religious zeal. People love to concentrate on how Christianity held back civilization (and it did), but they don't want to hear how religion helped advance it, especially in more modern times.

You can't take away religion and assume we'd be a more advanced society. It's far more complex than that.

I am not the one who says we'd be a more advanced society (like I said, that the Middle Ages were devoid of progress is a myth). But the World Trade Center attack wouldn't have happened. And I disagree that society would be worse off. For one thing, I don't associate that picture with a society that has never had religion, I associate it with a society that has outgrown it.

And many atheists consider profit and technology subordinate not even to faith in God (some atheists though are socialists or communists, but it's not like all Christians were dissenters). Without some phony afterlife to look forward to, the only way to have happiness is to bring it on now.

Here's a man who can explain it better than me. Science historian James Burke really lays out how important these "revolutionary religious fanatics" were almost singlehandedly responsible for creating the modern technological world (the one with the ability to build 2 110 story skyscrapers) into existence.

One of the most galling misconceptions made by many modern people is that freedom "from" religion was responsible for the technological and cultural advancements rooted from the Italian Renaissance. That's simply not true. Newton was a religious fanatic who was driven to invent modern physics just to see how "God" operated. Galileo may have been a harsh critic of the Pope, but he received Communion every week he was sentenced to house arrest for preaching his anti-Aristotle view of the universe (the last 10 years of his life, to be exact). Michael Faraday, the man credited with discovering the connection between electricity and magnetism that pretty much dictates how we generate almost all of our electricity (as well as how we communicate electronically) was a Glassite, a Scotish form of Dissenter.

Galileo may have been a harsh critic of the Pope, but he received Communion every week he was sentenced to house arrest for preaching his anti-Aristotle view of the universe (the last 10 years of his life, to be exact)

But consider that Aristotle was no Christian, and yet the RCC so ardently defended his philosophies, especially his metaphysical treatises (Thomas Aquinas incorporated the concept into his "Five Ways"). Galileo was more Christian than they, at heart.

The problem was not with Aristotle, but with Aristotle's view of the universe being in the Bible. If it was wrong, it undermined the entire Church. This battle had little to do with actual religion. When Copernicus initially proposed his solarcentric universe model, the Catholic Church was pleased. It gave them the ability to introduce a new calendar that was far more accurate than the one they were using (which was nearly 2 weeks out of alignment). When Galileo initially published "The Starry Messenger", no one took much notice, until he said that his findings proved the part of the Bible which claimed the Earth was at the center of the universe was dead wrong. THEN the Inquisition came calling. In reality, the entire episode was rooted in politics, not religion.

Given that the Church was the state in Italy at the time, it was even more so politcs.

The Church itself was a political entity. What Galileo's writings did was undermine the political power of the Church (divinely granted from Biblical teachings). The Church itself had accepted that Copernicus was right years before Galileo published his first book.

This is an excellent post. I am actually pissed when people misrepresent the Galileo incident.
