Mispelling of guinea, derogatory slang for Italian..The most vile racial slur that can be used against an Italian-American. Refers to the Guinea Coast of Africa; using this slur is a very offensive way of implying that Italian-Americans are non-whites (something we tend to get very defensive about!!). Unlike the "N-word", which African-Americans sometimes use to address each other, no Italian-American would ever address another Italian-American using this word. Nor would they use the word "wop" (also offensive, but not in a racial way). HOWEVER, it IS common for Italian-Americans to refer to each other as "dago"; this is used the same way that blacks use the N-word with each other. and .... not sure of the genesis of "guinea" ... but I'm told "wop" was derived from Immigration officials stamping W.O.P. on papers of arriving Italians, meaning With-Out-Passport |

There were many "shape up" gangs lookin for day work & would assemble there hoping to be called. Pop would tell me often of his boss Tommy Cocoran showing up every now & then so see how things were going. Tommy would look out twoards the eagar would-be workers & often bemoan "Jaysus Christ Willie!! what we'got here...not an uckin white man out there. The crew was mostly Italians. Such was life on the waterfront of NYC in the 40's |

At one time, Italians were considered no better than blacks (like the Irish, funny how that goes) and the slur was meant to label them as being from the Guinea Coast of Africa. It probably stuck because any comparison of a white ethnicity to blacks would be considered such a grave offense that it would bring on an immediate reaction. Google is your friend. |
