There were many "shape up" gangs lookin for day work & would assemble there hoping to be called. Pop would tell me often of his boss Tommy Cocoran showing up every now & then so see how things were going. Tommy would look out twoards the eagar would-be workers & often bemoan "Jaysus Christ Willie!! what we'got here...not an uckin white man out there. The crew was mostly Italians. Such was life on the waterfront of NYC in the 40's |
