$5.29/Gal. Gas In Orlando, Fla. Now!

Posted by JayZeeBMT on Sun Mar 6 07:23:46 2011

the price of a gallon of gasoline has reached $5.29 in Orlando, Florida, ABC News reports. A pair of gas stations near the airport in that city are charging $5.29 and $5.19 for regular gas, and more prices north of $4/gal. are being seen around the country as unrest in the Middle East continues. This week, protests are planned in Saudi Arabia, which is the largest exporter of oil to the US, and coupled with increasing prices for everything from foodtuffs to clothing to airfares, the ongoing economic recovery could be swiftly trabsformed into a devastating "double dip" recession.

I think we are in for a very rough year. Modern human civilization needs food and oil if it is to survive, and when these are priced out of the reach of ordinary working people, trouble ensues.

DISCLAIMER: This is my opinion. I am not an economist. This is not financial advice.

I'm a "radical, militant, leftist liberal", to use LuchAAA's words, and the fact that our ability to function as a civilized society depends of affordable food and oil has always been readily apparent to me. Never mind the fact that transporting food to market depends on oil, modern farming depends on oil, too...

We are about to find ourselves in deep trouble, the kind of trouble we haven't seen in this country since the Great Depression. In the worst case, there will be a noticeable contraction in the numbers of people living on this planet.

When countries decide it is better to take by force what they cannot obtain through trade, people will die.

When people cannot feed their children and become desperate enough to take by force what they cannot afford to buy, people will die.

When farmers consume locally what they would ordinarily have shipped globally, people will die.

The near-term future isn't looking too good. Consider:

The price of corn has doubled over the last six months.

The price of wheat has more than doubled over the past year.

The price of soybeans is up about 50% since last June.

The price of cotton has more than doubled over the past year.

The commodity price of orange juice has doubled since 2009.

The price of sugar is the highest it has been in 30 years.

If you are not rich, with good political and corporate connections, it's about to get a whole lot harder to put bread on your table.

You know who may be in the best shape to handle this, at least around Metro NY? The MTA's fixed route operations---who locked in their fuel contract when fuel was in the mid-high $2 range.

I agree. We were too busy "debating" global warming that we decided that since there was a debate on global warming, there was NO urgency to move on from oil. Now that's biting us in the butt.

But he's right, it certainly won't help it.

I find a lot less money in my pocket than did a year ago, as I am putting double what I used to in my car. That money is no longer being spent on other goods. The same with all things that are going up. The more you spend on the necessities, the less you are spending on the non-necessities, and that hurts the economy....and badly.

There you go. That can be replaced if we had to. We could ween ourselves off oil if we had to without civilization collapsing but it will happen slowly because we're not yet running out of oil.

I'm not against nuclear power but it has little to do with oil. Our power comes from natural gas and coal. Oil is a small player.

2/3 of our oil is from DOMESTIC sources, or Canadian/Mexican. That's why this raising of prices over the last month was totallyt speculative, as places like "Egypt", etc mean nothing to us in terms of oil use. If the Democrats weren't so negative about using more of our own it would further help the situation.

Obama and his EPA boss are jumping for joy today. We fat Americans need to use less petroleum products becasue we are bad greedy people. Start drilling onshore and offshore today and within 2 years the oil will be out of the ground. We can do that and develop alternatives at the same time.
