Mubarak Flies The Coop! |
|
Posted by JayZeeBMT on Fri Feb 11 08:25:42 2011 Al-Jazeera is reporting Mubarak and his family are on their way to the United Arab Emirates. He's lucky he was able to leave Cairo on his own two feet. I was waiting for the protesters to run him out on a rail! |

If only that were true...Eight minutes in to the CBS World News Roundup this morning, which I was streaming via WTOP's online stream, they announced that there were reports that Mubarak had fled to Sharm el-Shiekh. This was stated again by the WTOP anchors at 20 past 8 (12 minutes after it was aired via the CBS Radio Network) and again via a CBS report at the bottom of the hour. Haaretz is reporting that Al Arabiya television confirmed that Mubarak is now in Sharm el-Sheikh, and a search on Google shows many other newspapers, TV news channels, and sources reporting the same thing. OTOH, I can't find a single one that says he is in the UAE. Considering his defiant speech last night, why would you believe a report that he fled the country? |

All of these reports mention Dubai or UAE as a Mubarak destination. I'm not going to go too far out on a limb and rigidly say that's Mubarak's destination, but it is increasingly clear he is not in Cairo, and as more and more news agencies report in, I'm willing to say we might just find him in Dubai a few hours from now. |

There is one source saying UAE, everyone else is saying Sharm. Couple that with the fact it doesn't make much sense for a leader under such pressure to leave his post to leave the country if he intends to stay in power, as Mubarak's speech last night suggested he wanted to do. I'm signing off for Shabbat in a few minutes but if I were a betting man, I'd bet Mubarak is still in Egypt when I next sign online in 26 hours or so. |

Posted by David Fairthorne on Fri Feb 11 14:20:28 2011, in response to Re: Mubarak Flies The Coop!, posted by WMATAGMOAGH on Fri Feb 11 09:10:21 2011. We are, unwillingly again, parties to a long twilight struggle, this time with Islamism - most notably Iran, its proxies and its potential allies, Sunni and Shiite. We should be clear-eyed about our preferred outcome - real democracies governed by committed democrats - and develop policies to see this through. It's one thing for Charles Krauthammer to express a preferred outcome, but quite another to say how to achieve such an outcome. Pursuit of the "freedom agenda" runs the risk of extremist Islamist theocracies coming to power. The Muslim Brotherhood claims to be opposed to Islamic extremism, but can it be trusted? According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim_brotherhood: "In the group's belief, the Quran and Sunnah constitute a perfect way of life and social and political organization that God has set out for man. Islamic governments must be based on this system and eventually unified in a Caliphate. The Muslim Brotherhood's goal, as stated by Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Banna was to reclaim Islam’s manifest destiny, an empire, stretching from Spain to Indonesia." George W. Bush's "freedom agenda" didn't work out too well in Iraq, or anywhere else so far as I know. In the case of Egypt, pursuit of the freedom agenda could result in the Muslim Brotherhood forming an Islamic Republic of Egypt. The alternative is to support the corrupt and dictatorial Mubarak regime, which is the policy of most of Egypt's neighbors, including Israel. |
