Yes, there's a delicate balance between going too far in one direction (supporting the Shah to such an extent that when he is dumped you're hated) and going too far in the other direction (invading Iraq to overthrow a vicious bastard who wasn't actually doing much harm to our interests).Let's hope Obama is better than most of his predecessors at managing that balance. Supposed true story. The King of Saudi Arabia tells Jimmy Carter that the Shah is impotent, putting the accent on "po" as in Edgar Allan Poe. Carter replies, yes he's very im-PO-tent, meaning important. |
