Mariah probably watches and weeps.Debbie was about her age now in those videos. Mariah started out clean and cute. Her natural vocal talents was all she and anybody asked. I was a fan. She started whoring up more and more as time went by (the opposite of what a great performer should do) to stay relevant and lost me (and others). Of course hearing the nonsense that comes out of her mouth during interviews didn't help. To be fair to Mariah, artists that reach stardom at a very young age like she did have it harder, and don't know what to do when the years pass them by. They are also more vulnerable to unscrupulous handlers. Blondie had a life before becoming popular. They didn't reach fame until after they were over 30. That probably helped them put the whole thing into context and just enjoy the ride. They still seem to have a blast today. |

I know you're statement about Britney & Miley is not in the same context but it reminded me of that lol. |

Music (with some exceptions) already sucked by the time 2Pac and Biggie hit the scene. That stuff was forced.I was a kid growing up listening to Afrika Bambataaa. Unlike SWPLs, I didn't discover it later. I liked some of the commercial stuff of the time like Run DMC too. It was fun stuff. Genuine. Good times. It's how people must have felt like when hearing Elvis or Chuck Berry for the first time. |

The origins of rap are traced to an apartment building on Sedwick Av. I forget the address. When it was sold a few years ago, there was an effort to list that place on the National Register of Historic Places. |

It's how people must have felt like when hearing Elvis or Chuck Berry for the first time.Heh, reminds me of when 50 Cent first came out in the early 2000s, that dude is what got me into hip hop, I remeber when I bought the "Get rich or Die Trying" album downtown Brooklyn lol. It was awsome, on Hot 97 they played mostly every song on the album, my uucle didn't even have to take the wrapper off of his copy of the album because they played mostly every song off of it on the radio lol. I happen to be living in Queens when his second album came out, everybody was selling that album on bootleg and blasting the song "Piggy Bank" on the shopping strip on Jamaica Ave near 165th street. I pass though that area when I'm busfanning from time to time and I have never seen anything like that since 05. Yes, people still sell bootleg CD there, but when the The Masscure came out all those bootlegers stepped there game up trying to sell that CD lol. |

That's not the same though. 50 cent was a new artist, but he didn't invent a whole new style of music. When I was 12 rap didn't exist (at least where I was, but by the time I was 13 it was everywhere. It's really special to be witness to such a cultural revolution. Not everybody liked it though. Most white boys back then hated rap for some reason. And disco. Music was more segregated than now to some extent. Even on the radio. |

You are correct that it's unrelated to the American evolution and roots of that sound. However if Adriano Celentano had been an American, history may have been different. He is essentially mocking foreign (to Italians) pop music by purposely speaking in American-sounding gibberish in that clip and it's hilarious. Celentano was always ahead of his time in the entertainment arena. He's a legend in Italy.Southern Italy has an ancient hip hop-sounding folk music called "tammurriata". It's actually African sounding. It represents women fighting for their man with knives. |

They were already rapping at the Queensbridge and Ravenswood Projects when I was a kid in the 70's. This may have been after it had already been popularized in the Bronx earlier in the 70's but Queens was moving in parallel with the evolution of the sound and played a major effort during its early days. |

My point is that what may somewhat sound like hip-hop has various cultural origins. The Bronx connection is widely accepted as the birth of American rap but there is no "world inventor" of that kind of sound and they have all influenced each other to a certain degree over the centuries. |

That's because rap is now exhausted.Asking people in the Bridge or anywhere else to make quality rap is like asking their residents of the 1970's to make quality rockabilly or doo-wop. The good sounds nowadays come out of the Brazilian favelas. |

I would say that music in the "civilized" world (around the Mediterranean) was very similar long ago and still sounds similar today. But I think that historical aside, the immdeiate origins for rap are in 1950's and 60's Jamaica. For such a little place Jamaica has been extremely influential in music. |

A lot of people just couldn't accept that a white guy from a trailer park in Detroit was better than the practically every black rapper out there at the time, and I think that BET still doesn't play Eminem's videos although I don't watch that garbage. That being said I think that Eminem is the greatest rapper alive despite the amount of times Lil Wayne and Jay-Z will try to give themselves the title. |

Rappers just don't care about their music as much as record sales no more since online piracy is causing the industry to decline. Quality music can only be found on mixtapes where rappers don't really care about record sales. |
