Maybe we should never have built the new terminal at Stillwell. That new terminal is an abomination. It is downright FUGLY. They could and should have fully restored the old one. |

I had occasion to go to this one after a photo shoot...This one has an electric chair - they ask a subject from the audience sit, charge it up and light a torch from her tongue. And yes its quite real - the "subject" was a friend I entered with and she told me how it felt. Then there is a girl that lays down on a bed of nails while selected members of the audience then stand on her.. She also eats glass There is a sword swallowing and fire eating act too Stuff like that |

You know what, I am going to get killed again over this but WTF!Times Square and CI are being reclaimed thanks to Rudy. I could care less what others say about it. They are entitled to their opinions and I am entitled to mine. Charles Gargano of the Empire State Development Corp wanted to redevelop 42nd Street going back to 1980! Even after Sfacheem became governor in 1982. But it stalled for years. Why? BECAUSE OF THE ADULT BUSINESSES. Before they were able to begin the transformation and reconstruction, the Adult businesses had to go. Enter Rudy!! after a big fight he succeeded and that started the Times Square Boom! In addition, he just happened to take care of the out of control crime as well!!! This brought tourists and the rest is history. We were able to recover much quicker after 9/11 because of this. Now onto CI. Howard Golden (Brooklyn BP before 2001) wanted an amature Sportplex to rise where MCU stadium is. Horrace Bullard a black property owner wanted to develop a new Steeplechase. When the city ran out of patience with him... you guessed it out comes the rasce card. This delayed anything in CI for years. Rudy had enough and pushed for the minor league stadium which opened in 2001. Now with a new stadium, families were attracted to the area. THey stayed around after the gsmes and spent mopney in the amusement area, the MTA noticed and the Stillwell project after years on the back burner was now front and center. Now all of a sudden artists, hipsters, and families started to come down to CI and PEOPLE Noticed. As a result the zoning change went through, NYC purchased the land from Thor and CI will be better than it ever was. All thanks to Rudy. This is my opinion based on the facts I have about the issue. |

Remember the DEMS were not going to touch this issue based on ideology. I only wish I could find the data and link it for you. I'm sure that is the only way you will beleive me. But in any event as an aside... lets just say that I happened to find my way into some of these establishments back then and the "Employees" I have spoken to were over the top pissed at Rudy, this is more first hand proof. I would sell it and let the developers do whatever they felt the market demanded - if that meant smaller office towers so be it. I am not in favor of government sponsored development particularly with respect to real estate (Port Authority = government). By the way this is the real reason I object to the development of Coney Island the way it is being handled. The extent of government's involvement should be zoning - the city should not own or in any way involve itself in commercial real estate or entertainment. I do not believe in government ownership or construction of sports stadiums, etc. |

CI wa son the cusp of being developped by two private firms. Thor & Taconic. Thor bought the land 4 years ago. Thor also wanted it to be a year round venue. They proposed Time-shares, hotels, and high end housing to off set the cost of the development and make it economically viable. BUT..... the community objected and did not want THose people (I.E. high end) in CI. They were also afraid that if a portion of the amusement district was developped as non-amusement, after a zoning change, then in the future the amusement district could concenivably shrink until it is gone. THis is why NYC had to set in after the new zoning was approved. NYC will keep it an amusement area. |

The city should just zone the area for tall buildings but let market forces drive what actually gets built. |

But the isue is that NYC has a very high inventory of non class A office space. Class A offers all modern amenities. It also takes time to build. By building now when construction costs are lower and interest rates ar elower, we will be ready when the economy comes back and there is demand for new class A space in the financial capital of the world. |

Well that's it, if people wants to go somewhere for real rides, it would be to Six Flags and such. Astroland had dark rides and some 'flat rides'. These would be the 'lesser attractions' at 6 Flags. The big attractions are roller coasters and sadly Astroland had only the Cyclone and a kiddie coaster. Hopefully the new developers would put stuff there that's worth riding. |
