Commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday that the NFL can't "guarantee a team" will be in Los Angeles.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday that the NFL can't "guarantee a team" will be in Los Angeles.
Speaking at the commissioner's annual news conference before Sunday's Super Bowl, Goodell acknowledged that local billionaire Ed Roski Jr.'s 75,000-seat stadium proposal in Industry had clearance to be built but noted that questions remained.

"I think we are working hard to get a team back into the Los Angeles market because we know there are millions of fans that would love to see NFL football as part of their community, and I think progress is being made," he said.

But financing the $800-million stadium in today's economy will be a challenge, Goodell said. "And with the labor agreement that we have, the cost of building that stadium is almost entirely on the ownership, and that is a big burden to pay, particularly in this kind of environment," he said.

Roski and Majestic Realty Co. Vice President John Semcken, who oversees the project, are in Miami for the Super Bowl.

The Coliseum's wiki page has an interesting picture from a proposal to make the Coliseum suitable for the NFL.

There's talk of Jacksonville losing the Jaguars to LA or one of several other cities trying to lure them away. I think the Jags have a long-term contract with the city, but they can get out of it if they don't draw well.

Tampa is in the running for the 2014 Super Bowl. NYC/NJ are trying hard to get it too.

Roski is trying to lure an existing team. The Bills, Rams, or most likely the Jaguars. Of course the NFL couldn't guarantee that an existing team would move. This is not really news.

False. The Coliseum has been improved since the Rams. In fact it was upgraded after the Raiders left. But it's not going to ever be a modern football stadium and there's only so much that can be done to improve it. I'm pretty sure that it's registered as a historic place and they can't change too much.

Los Angeles really killed their chances for one of the expansion teams when they refused to build a new stadium and voted for Mark Ridley-Thomas' proposal that the city of LA would support the NFL returning >b>only to the Coliseum. NFL owners hated the Coliseum because at the time gangs were bad in that neighborhood and because they also wanted a new modern stadium to be built complete with luxury boxes, etc.

Roski isn't an owner. He's the multibillionaire building a stadium that needs a team. I really don't know what he's thinking by building it privately. They only play 8 regular season games a year at home. And he's too far from LA to get a major college like USC or UCLA as a tenant. He's also too far to reasonably get big Latin American soccer matches. I think that he wants his stadium to be like Citywalk and it will have restaurants, a movie theater, etc, but still. The reason that Staples has been so successful is that they have something going on (Kings, Lakers, Clippers, concerts nearly every day. He can't copy that model with a football stadium, plus put it far from most of wealthy LA.

The Jaguars sold out only one of their eight home games this season, despite being in playoff contention until almost the end. IINM the Raiders had only one or two sellouts as well.

No, the stadium is on the 60 and the gold line will be on the 10 (adjacent to Metrolink). But one of the proposals for extending the East LA gold line is to follow the 60.

It made some sense when there were only two divisions in the 60s. They probably did this to keep some key rivalries alive. Travel isn't much of an issue since the minimum time between games is 4 days (Thursday games preceded by a Sunday game).

I mean like before the Rays were created in the MLB, I never understood why the Tigers were in the East. [I know the Central was 'new' and there was no other team that could be moved without making the divisions uneven.]

Yeah, but again, Green Bay doesn't really count. While it's technically a small market team it has one of the top 5 largest fan bases in the NFL. I'd venture to say that the Cowboys, Giants, Patriots, Steelers, and Packers (in that order) are the 5 most popular teams in the league. The Panthers, Jaguars, Titans, and probably Rams all have the smallest fan bases in the NFL.

That's a very sad point.

On top of that, dont kow how a strike or a lockout will be percived by fans , especially if the economy doesn't sgnicantly improve.

I mean nationwide as well. Green Bay has a lot of nationwide interest, but how many Green Bay fans are there outside of the northern midwest? How often do you see Green Bay gear in Phoenix versus Raiders gear?

Yeah NFL is the #1 sport in the US, MLB #2 - I believe. I wonder: should there be a lockout, will MLB become #1 again?

MLB is actually stepping up their marketing and, I believe, starting to draw in more fans again. During the early to mid 1990s MLB was losing fans as the younger generation just didn't find it exciting. One of the best side effects of the "steroid era" is it got fans to watch and follow baseball again. Ever since 1998 (except for maybe last season) baseball had been breaking attendance records left and right and TV viewership was increasing.

NFL will always be #1 in the USA. Why? The games are almost always a predictable 3 hours long (give or take a few minutes). Heck, when was the last time you were at a bar on Sunday morning (or afternoon) and noticed that all of the early games (or late games) didn't end at approximately the same time. They almost always end at the same time no matter where they are. Baseball, well, it doesn't work that way.

Phoenix likely isn't the best example. There are a lot of California "expatriates" in Arizona. That being said, when I was at the bars and watching the games, there was a fairly even division of Packer fans versus Raider fans. The Raiders, I hate to say it, have developed somewhat of a bandwagon fan base.

One other thing that I've noticed is that the Bay Area is an NFL town (all everyone talks about Monday morning is the Niners and Raiders during football season). Cal and Stanford have much more "niche" fan bases (generally students and alumni). Los Angeles, to me, seems just the opposite. LA is very much a big college football town and USC and UCLA rule the roost. The general populace (as well as students and alumni) are all divided between USC or UCLA for their football attention. I doubt that even with an NFL team that this would change all that much. LA is for better or worse the country's largest college football dominant football market (it was when the Raiders and Rams were both there and will be in the future). Most other NFL markets are NFL first, college second.

Very true, but personaly I prefer watching my dumb incompetent Mets.

Football for me doesn't kick in til either the Giants or Jets are on the verge of something interesting.

Who'd like to see the '72 Dolphins play the '07 Patriots?

Nobody would because the '07 Patriots weren't even the best team of 2007.

Indianapolis ended up going A.F.C. South while Miami stayed A.F.C. East. Arizona wanted to stay N.F.C. East too.

The Chargers played as the Los Angeles Chargers in 1960, the Rams played as the Los Angeles Rams from 1946 through 1994 (1980 through 1994 in Anaheim) and the Raiders played as the Los Angeles Raiders from 1982 through 1994.

Boston, too, had a rough start with football until the A.F.L. placed the Patriots there in 1960.

IIRC, Oakland and Cleveland have been the only cities to get their teams back. Baltimore received a relocated team and Houston an expansion team.

I have to agree with that. If the Jets made it, I might've been more interested in the game, but I was more channel surfing than paying attention to the whole game.
